The Latin Women's Initiative Fashion Show

Carmen Maria Montiel

Houston, Texas resident Carmen María Montiel has a history of serving her community by supporting numerous charitable organizations and foundations. Among the many groups with which Carmen María Montiel has been involved is the Latin Women’s Initiative.

Founded in 1995 as the Mexican Women’s Initiative, the organization changed its name in 2006 to reflect the diversity of its membership; it has members from every Latin American country. The organization was founded to raise awareness of the socio-economic conditions faced by communities of Latin American origin in the Houston area, and to provide support for the growing population. Early initiatives included fundraising for healthcare such as medical exams, cholesterol testing, and diabetes diagnoses. As the organization expanded, so did its activities, including in its first Fashion Show in 2002.

The Latin Women’s Initiative Fashion Show and Luncheon has been hosted annually since its inaugural year and is the organization's flagship fundraising event. The event features clothing and accessories created by Latin American fashion designers and food based on recipes from the Latin Women’s Initiative’s cookbook.
