Carmen María Montiel launched her career as a TV host for Buenos Dias Venezuela. Since then she has worked as a host of Close Up, a disk jockey and producer for RQ 910, and a news anchor for Telemundo-Houston. Carmen María Montiel has served on the board of directors for UNICEF since February of 2009.

One of UNICEF's main goals involves providing education to girls across the world. In 2012, approximately 63 million school-age girls did not attend school. Since in many places obstacles to girls' school attendance still remain, UNICEF works in various ways to empower girls to receive the same education as their male peers. Education for girls also helps them to rise above the poverty level.

As part of its assistance to female education, UNICEF has worked with policy makers, helped to monitor schools, collaborated with community organizations, improved communication avenues, and headed research. The organization's efforts have aided girls in locations from Afghanistan to Zambia.
